Ballpark — a Daily Estimation Game

Ballpark is a daily estimation game: three questions a day whose answer is a number — how fast, how many, how heavy, how far. There's no multiple choice to hide behind. You type the number your gut gives you, lock it in, and the real answer appears immediately, along with the story behind it.

Scoring is all about closeness. A dead-on guess banks 700 points; miss by double or half and you still take a healthy chunk; guess wildly and the points drain away fast. Nobody knows how many bones a cat has or how fast a sneeze travels — the game is whether your sense of the world's sizes and speeds is better calibrated than you'd expect. It usually isn't, and that's the fun.

How the daily Ballpark works

  1. 1.Read the question

    Each question asks for a single number, with the unit shown right in the answer box. Don't reach for a search engine — the whole game is what your own head thinks the number is.

  2. 2.Lock in your estimate

    Type your guess and hit LOCK. First answer is final — no revising once you've seen how question one went. The answer, your distance from it, your points and a short fact behind the number appear straight away.

  3. 3.Three questions, one verdict

    After the third reveal, the day totals up out of a possible 2,100. Land most of your guesses close and it's the clean green result; keep it in the ballpark for yellow. Then come back tomorrow better calibrated.

Tips

  • Anchor before you guess: think of one similar number you actually know, and scale from it. Known-city-population beats wild-stab every time.
  • Being 20% off scores far better than being 10× off — get the order of magnitude right first, then fine-tune the digits.
  • Don't round to comfortable numbers. If your head says 340, don't write 500 because it feels safer; the formula rewards the honest guess.
  • Extreme answers are rarer than they feel. When your gut screams an enormous number, halving it is right more often than not.

By proximity: a perfect guess is 700 points, and points fall away smoothly the further off you land — miss by the size of the answer itself and you bank about half. Three questions make a possible 2,100 a day.
Can I change an answer after locking it?
No — the first answer is final, which is what keeps a guess honest. The next question only appears once the current one is settled.
Are the questions real?
Yes. Every answer is a real, checkable number, and each reveal includes a short fact explaining where it comes from.
